OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Reserve safety Gerome Sapp is back with the team that drafted him.

The Baltimore Ravens on Monday acquired Sapp from the Indianapolis Colts for a conditional draft pick in 2007.

Sapp spent the last two seasons with the Colts after being waived by the Ravens in September 2004. He has played in 43 NFL games, including 14 with Baltimore, and recorded 74 tackles.

A sixth-round pick of the Ravens out of Notre Dame in 2003, Sapp has primarily served as a force on special teams.

Sapp was signed by the Colts shortly after the Ravens cut him and, in two years in Indianapolis, appeared in 29 games. He posted 64 tackles from scrimmage in those two seasons, playing primarily in nickel or dime situations, and was also a standout special teams performer.

In 2004, Sapp recorded 16 special teams tackles, all solo stops. Last season, he had 28 tackles on kick coverage duty, the second most on the team, with 21 of them being solo tackles.

Sapp is a physical hitter with good size (6-feet-1, 216 pounds), and, while his primary value likely will be on special teams, he could challenge for playing time from scrimmage with the Ravens. The team lost starting free safety Will Demps to the New York Giants as an unrestricted free agent and the unit has very little experience after starting strong safety Ed Reed.

The current projected starter at free safety is B.J. Ward, a second-year veteran signed as a free agent in 2005, and who has not logged a regular-season start.

Indianapolis coaches like the progress made this spring by young safeties Matt Giordano and Dexter Reid and the team has been impressed with sixth-round choice Antoine Bethea as well. While the Colts plan to keep 2005 first-round choice Marlin Jackson at cornerback, there is still a chance that he could be moved inside to safety.

Baltimore also announced Monday that it has waived quarterback Sonny Cumbie, defensive back Zach Norton and linebackers Ricky Foley and Zac Woodfin. Norton spent last season on the Baltimore practice squad, while the other three players were undrafted college free agents.
