Vince Young might be the future, but the now must not look so hot.

The Tennessean reported on its Web site on Sunday night that talks had heated up between the Titans and veteran quarterback Kerry Collins.

Tennessee selected Young with the third pick in the 2006 NFL draft out of national champion Texas and then traded longtime signal-caller Steve McNair to the Baltimore Ravens.

Young has received plenty of playing time in the preseason but currently stands behind veteran Billy Volek on the depth chart. But Volek has only 10 NFL starts -- all for the injured McNair last season -- and the Titans offense has struggled to score in the preseason.

The Tennessean reported that Collins, who was cut by the Oakland Raiders in March, has been searching for an opportunity to play significant minutes. The unsettled situation in Tennessee may fit his criteria.

According to the newspaper, the Titans were planning on bringing in Collins for a physical in the coming days.

Collins has played for four teams over 12 seasons, the last two with Oakland. He passed for 3,759 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season.

He took the Carolina Panthers to the NFC Championship game in 1996 and quarterbacked the New York Giants to the Super Bowl in 2000. In between, Collins struggled with a well-publicized drinking problem.
