Which backup quarterbacks have the best chance to emerge as starters this season? Here are five candidates:

Brady Quinn, Cleveland Browns: As of right now, he's the backup due to the time he's missed getting his contract done. I think he's going to be starting by the middle of the season if he's fully acclimated to the offense and the Browns are struggling, He's an extremely talented guy and the Browns are quite eager to get him in the saddle.

JaMarcus Russell, Oakland Raiders: This is another case of a rookie jumping into the position he'd be in already if not for delayed contract negotiations. I don't see the Raiders being good and the fans and front office will be aching to try out their young quarterback. That's why I was a little surprised that Daunte Culpepper signed with the Raiders when he could've been in a far better position in Jacksonville.

David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars: The incumbent in Jacksonville is Byron Leftwich, but Garrard has definitely gotten his share of starts over the years because of Leftwich's injuries. In those starts he's proved to be quite effective and the Jaguars have liked what they've seen. Expect him to come in at some point during the season and take over the reins again.

David Carr, Carolina Panthers: The mere fact that Carr was signed means that incumbent starter Jake Delhomme has something to worry about. The Panthers made this signing because they realize their window of opportunity to make it back to the Super Bowl is closing. If Delhomme can't get the job done, then they need a guy who can come in and give them the kind of leadership and strong play that Carr can provide as a former starting quarterback.

Brooks Bollinger, Minnesota Vikings: Tarvaris Jackson is the starter here, but that might not last long because of his inexperience. Don't be surprised if Bollinger gets the nod around the midpoint of the season if Jackson and the Vikings are struggling.
