Browns' Davis goes on IR
Davis, whose impressive exhibition season led to speculation about Jamal Lewis' future in Cleveland, will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. The Browns placed him on injured reserve Saturday.
Davis got hurt in the Browns' season opener against Minnesota on a hit by Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield. He was inactive the following week against Denver and had just five carries for 10 yards last Sunday in a 34-3 defeat at Baltimore.
The loss of Davis comes at a tough time for the winless Browns (0-3), who may not have Lewis for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Lewis has been bothered by a hamstring injury and did not practice all week. He is listed as doubtful -- at least a 75 percent chance he won't play.
Lewis also sat out against the Ravens, his former team.
Davis, selected in the sixth round out of Clemson, averaged 7.8 yards on 24 carries during the preseason. He had an 81-yard TD run against Detroit and his emergence had some wondering if he might replace the 30-year-old Lewis, who went to the same Atlanta high school as Davis.
But Davis got hurt in Week 1, when he gained only 5 yards on four carries.
To fill Davis' roster spot, the Browns signed running back Chris Jennings off their practice squad. Jennings was signed by the Browns on Aug. 18. He rushed for 63 yards on 18 carries in three preseason games. He also caught seven passes for 69 yards.
Jennings was signed to the Browns' practice squad on Sept. 7.
