Falcons president signs extension

Atlanta Falcons team president Rich McKay has signed a five-year contract extension, which runs through 2015.

McKay, who co-chairs the NFL's competition committee, signed the deal a few weeks ago during his sixth year with the team, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

"We are fortunate to have someone with Rich's credentials leading our club," Falcons owner & CEO Arthur Blank said in a statement. "During his time with us, Rich has contributed greatly to the Falcons through his long and deep knowledge and experience. We look forward to working with him for many years to come."

McKay served a dual role as the Falcons' general manager for four years until 2007, when Thomas Dimitroff was hired.

Beset by injuries, the Falcons (8-7) have floundered, missing the playoffs a year after an 11-5 season in which they advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2004.

McKay previously served as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for nearly nine seasons.
