The Washington Redskins have hired former New Orleans head coach Jim Haslett to be the team's defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN.

Haslett is expected to bring a 3-4 look to the Redskins defense under new head coach Mike Shanahan. The two spent a lot of time during Shanahan's season away from pro football discussing the possibility of having Haslett on his staff.

The deal came together on Tuesday night.

Haslett, 54, brings plenty of experience to the Redskins. A former linebacker for the Buffalo Bills, Haslett was head coach of the Saints from 2000 to 2005 and was interim head coach of the St. Louis Rams in 2008. Last year, he was head coach of the Florida Tuskers of the UFL.

Haslett will replace Greg Blache, who was on staffs of Joe Gibbs and Jim Zorn.
