Payton says the Saints decided to have Meachem undergo surgery last week to repair the second toe on his left foot. Payton says the injury occurred last season and continued to bother Meachem during recent offseason workouts.
Meachem led the Saints with 10 touchdowns last season, nine receiving and one after he stripped Washington defensive back Kareem Moore.
Also, the Saints have signed Auburn receiver Montez Billings and Kentucky linebacker Sam Maxwell, who'd been invited to try out at last weekend's rookie camp.
