New Orleans safety Darren Sharper will begin the season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to a report on NewOrleans.com.

Sharper has been on the PUP list throughout preseason because of offseason microfracture surgery on his left knee.

The Saints have been grooming Malcolm Jenkins, who played cornerback last season, to take over Sharper's safety position.

Sharper, 34, said Tuesday he hoped to play in the Saints' season opener Thursday night against Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.

Once Sharper is placed on the PUP list, he will be ineligible to play for the first six games. After that, a window opens where he can begin practicing and the Saints will have three weeks to decide whether they will activate him or put him on injured reserve and shelve him for the rest of the 2010 season.

Information from ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
