SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was inactive for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs because of a torn plantar fascia in his right foot.

It's the third time in five games Gates has been forced to sit with the injury.

Legedu Naanee, bothered by a hamstring injury, was the Chargers' third quarterback. Vincent Jackson, coming back from a calf injury that sidelined him in a loss to Oakland, started in Naanee's spot. Right guard Louis Vasquez sat out with a stinger.

Chiefs fullback Tim Castille was inactive and was replaced by Mike Cox.

Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel sat out after having an emergency appendectomy Wednesday morning. He was replaced by Brodie Croyle.
