ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Even without Deuce McAllister, the New Orleans Saints' running game is in good hands.
Perturbed after being described as a journeyman, fill-in Aaron Stecker responded with his first career 100-yard day in the Saints' 28-25 overtime victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.| Allen's Analysis |

Saints-Rams: How big of an effort was this from Stecker (100-plus yards) in McAllister's absence? This was a phenomenal effort from Stecker. Most people had wrote him off as a journeyman and he went out there and proved he could get the job done. His performance, this week and beyond, is extremely important because the Saints need a running game to keep the pressure off QB Aaron Brooks. If Stecker can sustain this type of effort, then the Saints won't miss McAllister nearly as much. But what about those Saints? Every time it seems as if it's time to count them out, they seem to pull it off. They did a good job defending the Rams' explosive offense and stopping them from putting up a ton of points. Eric Allen played cornerback for 14 NFL seasons with the Eagles, Saints and Raiders. He's a regular contributor to Insider. |
Game notes
The last time Bruce had three straight 100-yard receiving games was in 1995, when he had six in a row. He's now 14th on the career yards receiving list, passing Stanley Morgan. ... Rams G Chris Dishman left with a right knee sprain in the second quarter. ... The Rams have completed one pass to a TE this year after Brandon Manumaleuna made a 3-yard catch in the third quarter. ... Saints WR Talman Gardner (high ankle sprain) was carted off the field in the fourth quarter. ... Wilkins' 53-yard field goal gave him 1,000 career points. ... Carney has a pair of six-field goal games, both in 1993, and he tied his career high for attempts.
