Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA
Chargers Pro Bowl C Nick Hardwick sprained his right foot on the seventh play from scrimmage and was replaced by Cory Withrow. Hardwick plans to have an MRI on Monday.
The San Diego defense played a key role in the victory. The Chargers held the Raiders’ league-best rushing attack to just 53 yards (2.3 yards per carry), thanks to a front seven that did a great job of maintaining gap control and flowing to the ball. With NT Jamal Williams plugging up the middle and DEs Igor Olshansky and Luis Castillo playing stout two-gap defense, it allowed the four linebackers to do what they do the best -- run to the ball. With no ground game, Oakland was forced to throw the ball. That allowed defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell to send OLBs Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips after Daunte Culpepper, and they responded with a combined 4.5 sacks (Merriman had 2.5, Phillips 2).
