NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Jim Haslett wasn't ready to return to the place where his first head coaching job began with accolades and literally ended in disaster after Hurricane Katrina.
It took about three quarters of, in Haslett's words, "freakin' awesome" football to make the St. Louis defensive coordinator feel a little better about being back in New Orleans.
Five times since 1978, two teams in the same season have started 0-8. Half of those 10 won their ninth game, including the previously 0-8 Rams on Sunday. |

The Saints chose RB Deuce McAllister, out for the season after reconstructive surgery on his left knee, as honorary captain for the coin toss. ... Starting left tackle Jammal Brown left the game with what was called a lower left leg injury late in the first quarter. ... Bush was briefly knocked out of the game on a helmet-to-helmet hit. ... Rams rookie running back Antonio Pittman, drafted by New Orleans and cut after training camp, rushed for 53 yards, including a 43-yarder that set up a touchdown.

Finally, a win for the Rams! St. Louis did a nice job of utilizing its 12 (one running back, two tight ends) personnel groupings and mixing in both the run and pass. That balance created more space for running back Steven Jackson, while helping out the Rams’ struggling offensive tackles in pass protection on the edges. Coach Scott Linehan did a good job of using Jackson on early downs, which placed the Rams in more manageable second- and third-down situations. St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger was impressive in the way he attacked the short and intermediate areas of the Saints’ zone defense, distributing the ball nicely to wide receivers Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Drew Bennett, and tight end Randy McMichael.
