PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A terrible field and dreadful weather caused the Dolphins and Steelers to rewind to a different NFL era, a time when points came at a premium and one field goal could decide a game.
They trudged through the quagmire of Heinz Field, nearly going all night without scoring. Nearly.Everything about the Steelers-Dolphins game was ugly -- from the playing field to Miami's 0-10 record entering the game. When it was all over, the teams combined for the lowest scoring output in MNF history. | ||

running for 81 to go over 1,000 for the third straight season. ...
It was the lowest-scoring Monday night game since the prime time
games began in 1970. The previous low was Jacksonville's 9-0 win
over Pittsburgh last season. ... The Dolphins' Sept. 30 game at
Oakland was also delayed by lightning, for 30 minutes. ... The rain
fell on and off all game. ... The Steelers played a 0-0 tie against
Cincinnati in 1933, their first season. ... Steelers LT Marvel Smith was a late injury scratch.

Scouts Buzz
It was a game in which the weather dictated the play more than any offensive or defensive scheme. Pittsburgh struggled to get its running game untracked as the field was too sloppy for their offensive line to pull or trap to make the off-tackle play work, and neither team was able to run the ball outside the tackles with any effectiveness. When Miami lost their top two running backs, they had to resort to maximum protection and just three receivers running routes to give rookie QB John Beck time to get the ball off. In the end it was the longest drive of the game for Pittsburgh that lasted nine plays and went for 46 yards that put the ball in field-goal range for kicker Jeff Reed to score the winning three points.
