RB Fred Jackson was released by Buffalo today. His time in the Bills' backfield dates back to 2007, but his last 1,000-yard rushing season was 2009. At 34, he was the oldest running back in the NFL.

Jets RB Stevan Ridley, who underwent major knee surgery last November, is expected to begin the season on the PUP list. They have three capable backs in Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Zac Stacy, so there's no need to rush Ridley. Todd Bowles also left open the possibility of CB Dee Milliner (wrist surgery) beginning the season on short-term IR. That would help with roster management.

Surgery on Jaguars TE Julius Thomas would be to tighten ligaments at finger joint that were stretched at injury. They tighten naturally but haven't done so as quickly as hoped and won't be fully healed by opener. Surgery now gets him back sooner.

Rams made a series of roster moves to get closer to league-mandated 75 players by Tuesday. No major shocks though CB Imoan Claiborne, who had played well in preseason was a mild surprise. Team has three more moves to make to get to 75.

Ryan Clark says Rex Ryan's decision to start Taylor is about potential: “You know what you have with those other guys. … Here’s the guy with the most upside.”

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain has been activated off the physically unable to perform list and can begin practicing this week. He will miss the first four games of the regular season due to violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. McClain has been recovering from offseason knee surgery.

Joique Bell said he was somewhat limited in reps but that he did everything with the first team offense for the Detroit Lions on Monday. Bell, who was taken off PUP earlier in the day, said his recovery has "exceeded my expectations."

Because of injuries, the Jets may have to play "some" starters on Thursday night, per Todd Bowles. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick won't play. Bowles hasn't decided whether Bryce Petty or Matt Flynn will start at QB.
