Falcons, WR White reach extension
Roddy White's contract holdout is over.
The Atlanta Falcons said Saturday night the Pro Bowl receiver has agreed to a contract extension.
White had been holding out for a new deal since the start of training camp.
A source said White's deal is for six years and $50 million ($18 million guaranteed). It makes him the third-highest paid receiver in the NFL behind Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald, who averages $10 million a year, and Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers.
"We're always going to be an organization that rewards players who have been productive on the field for us and good citizens off the field," Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. "We're glad to get this contract situation resolved and we look forward to a long association with Roddy."
His current contract was set to expire after this season and he could have become a restricted free agent in 2010.
The signing comes after second-year pro Harry Douglas, who was expected to be one of Atlanta's top three receivers, went down with a season-ending injury.
White is coming off a season in which he recorded a career-high 1,382 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 88 catches, the beneficiary of an outstanding performance from quarterback Matt Ryan.
Ryan won The AP's Offensive Rookie of the Year award after an 11-5 season in which the Falcons made the playoffs, only a year removed from a dismal 2007 that saw Michael Vick incarcerated on a dogfighting conviction and coach Bobby Petrino leave after 13 games to coach Arkansas.
Ryan threw 16 touchdowns in 2008, seven of which went to White.
