Joey Evans

SELECTED BY ATLANTA , ROUND 7, PICK 18, OVERALL PICK 219
DE | (6-3, 260, 4.9) | North Carolina
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Lettered in football, basketball and track in high school. Redshirted in 1997. Came off the bench in all games in '98 and had 12 stops. Played in every game and started twice in '99 and had 24 tackles, including five for loss, and three sacks. Did not start a game in 2000 but played in every game and played at least 30 snaps in all but one game. Was named team's co-Most Improved Defensive Player. Had 38 tackles, including 11 for loss and finished second to Julius Peppers in sacks with eight. In '01, Evans had 40 stops, including nine for loss and 2 1/2 sacks in 12 games.

Positives: Has gotten bigger, stronger and better every year he has been in the program and has been a very durable player. Quick off the ball. Has quick hands and long arms and uses them on the pass rush.

Negatives: Slightly undersized. Is not a very tough or physical player. Has too much finesse in his game. Struggles when teams run at him and does not fight pressure well. May look better than he is because he is playing on the same line with Peppers and Ryan Sims.

Summary: Needs to toughen up and to become a more physical player to advance to the next level.
