Antwaan Randle el SELECTED BY CAROLINA , ROUND 2, PICK 30, OVERALL PICK 62 WR | (5-9, 190, 4.55) | Indiana By Pro Football WeeklyNotes: Fifth-year senior who was a partial qualifier in 1997. Was a full-time quarterback up until this year, when he began the year as a "Slash" player, then moved back to quarterback and almost salvaged the season for Indiana and Cam Cameron, winning first-team All-Big Ten honors as a quarterback. Big Ten Freshman of the Year in '98, when he completed 127-of-273 passes for 1,745 yards, with six touchdowns and 11 interceptions and ran 227 times for 873 yards and 10 touchdowns. Second-team All-Big Ten in '99, when he completed 150-279-2,277-17-7 and ran 224-788-13. Also a second-team All-Conference choice in some polls in 2000, when he slipped as a passer but had his best year running. Completed 133-277-1,783-10-14 and ran 218-1,270-13. In '01, Randle El completed 118-231-1,664-9-5, ran 180-969-8 and caught four passes for 30 yards.Positives: Terrific athlete and a tremendous college football player with great instincts, intangibles and rare competitiveness. Has played some college basketball and baseball. Very versatile. In a pinch, he can play running back, wide receiver, return specialist and may be able to line up at defensive back. A playmaker and impact player in the college game. Can really light up the scoreboard when he is on, as was the case in the 2001 Wisconsin game. Has superquick feet, very good running vision, excellent balance and body control, enough arm strength to throw almost every type of pass, great scrambling and very good running ability for a quarterback. Seems to have eyes all over his head. Has been very productive and durable. Throws on the run and roll well. Has soft, natural hands and a great knack for making the first man miss. Looks like a natural for punt returns. At the Senior Bowl, did a very nice job of catching the ball, making the first man miss and returning punts.Negatives: Lacks size for quarterback and running back and lacks great deep speed as a receiver. Is a streaky passer who is not that accurate. If he plays quarterback, he will need an offense designed around him that gets him outside of the pocket so he can see downfield. Was not that effective as a receiver early in 2001.Summary: Great intangibles and very versatile. Should be a punt returner, slot or third-down receiver and slash player in the NFL. Really upgraded himself at the Senior Bowl.* Player biographies are provided by Pro Football Weekly.
