Drayton Florence

SELECTED BY SAN FRANCISCO , ROUND 2, PICK 14, OVERALL PICK 46
DB | (6-0, 198, 4.44) | Tuskegee
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Lettered in football, basketball and baseball in high school. Started at cornerback for Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1999 and 2000 before. Played in every game at Tuskegee in '01. Moved into starting lineup in the fourth game of the season and combined with Roosevelt Williams to give Tuskegee the best cornerback play in Division II and better play than most college powerhouses. Florence had 41 tackles and broke up two passes in 1999; had 46-7 with four interceptions in 2000; and had 29-8-4 in '01. Scored three defensive touchdowns in '02, when he started every game and had 43-15-5 and recovered a fumble.

Positives: Big, strong, fast cornerback who is good in man-to-man and zone coverage. Good football intelligence in coverage. Good feet and agility, hips and speed range. Good hands. Can backpedal and turn. Can dominate and shut down the competition he faces on this level and has never really been tested. Is much more physical in coverage than run support. Fluid. Can find the ball.

Negatives: Gets too high in his backpedal and struggles in run support. Relies too much on his speed. Grab tackler who doesn't bring his feet. Soft vs. the run. Selfish and disrespectful. Has been in trouble. Raw. Thin legs. Not a form tackler. Relies too much on talent and gets sloppy with technique in coverage. Not a leader type in the past and has some growing up to do.

Summary: Held his own against the "big boys" at the Senior Bowl. Is smooth in transition, which may make him a better prospect than former teammate Williams, who was drafted by the Bears in 2002.
