Siddeeq Shabazz

SELECTED BY BALTIMORE , ROUND 7, PICK 45, OVERALL PICK 246
DB | (5-11, 202, 4.5) | New Mexico State
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: High school sprinter who ran a 4.45 on a fast track in 2001. Enrolled as a running back in 1998 and redshirted. Moved to defensive back in the fall of '99 and lettered. Backup rover in '00 before starting every game in '01, recording 107 tackles, four passes defensed and two interceptions while winning All-Sun Belt Conference honors. Started every game in '02 and had 93 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. Was a unanimous first-team All-Sun Belt selection.

Positives: A big hitter with a cornerback's straight-line speed. Is well-built, especially in his upper body and is a true all-around safety. Loves to play in the box. Strong in run support and plays downhill. Is a very good tackler who rarely misses, even in open space, when he is under control.

Negatives: Is not as comfortable in man-to-man coverage and it shows in his reaction time. Really bites on play-action and misdirection. Pedal gets too high and often gets turned down the field. May have cornerback speed, but not cover skills. Does more hitting than wrapping. Lacks total discipline and is caught out of position too much. Doesn't set and drive. Lacks technique.

Summary: Could make a living as a special-teams player and develop into a solid strong safety if he improves his cover skills and technique.
