Marcus Trufant

SELECTED BY PITTSBURGH , ROUND 1, PICK 11, OVERALL PICK 11
DB | (5-11, 199, 4.44) | Washington State
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Has run under 4.5 consistently but on a fast rubber surface. Top high school football player, track performer (best event was triple-jump) and basketball player. Played in 11-of-12 games (missed opener) and started seven games as a true freshman. Had 37 tackles and two interceptions. Started every game in 2000 and had 53 tackles and three interceptions. Started seven games in '01 but missed Games Four through Eight with a fractured bone in his hand and played with a cast after that. Had 37 tackles and three interceptions. Started every game in '02 and had 69 tackles, one tackle for loss and three interceptions. Also returned 32 punts for 341 yards.

Positives: An outstanding athlete with top character and instincts. Has been very productive, uses his hands well and is at his best in man-to-man coverage. Anticipates well before reacting and driving to the ball. Is quick to support against the run and tackles low, but can hit at times. Has good ball skills and recovers when beaten, also has leaping ability, catch-up speed and football intelligence in both man and zone coverage. Anticipates cuts and is a step ahead of the receiver. Is smooth in transition for the most part. Had a very solid week of practices at the Senior Bowl. Capable return man who is elusive in the open field.

Negatives: Doesn't have top-end speed and can lose a step at his break point and in transition. Prefers side-shuffle to pedal. Has very small hands and lacks great size. Needs to make more plays on the ball. Lacks strength. Not a wrap-up tackler.

Summary: Fluid, shutdown corner who gets excellent position, a great break on the ball and excels in run support. Strong Senior Bowl solidified his status as an early first-round pick. Could contribute immediately.
