Jon Clanton

NT | (6-1, 297, 4.89) | Nebraska
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Redshirted in 1998, saw limited action in '99 and 2000, and started nine games when NT Jason Lohr was hurt in '01. Had one tackle in '99; five in 2000; and 24 tackles, including six for losses, and 2½ sacks in '01. Started the first five games at defensive tackle as a fifth-year senior, then switched to nose tackle and split time. Totaled seven starts and had 45-5-1 and forced two fumbles.

Positives: Is quick and quick into gaps with the ability to disrupt plays in the backfield. Has some agility and balance and good feet. His lateral pursuit is above average, and he plays with a low center of gravity. Is often the first player off the ball and usually keeps a good pad level.

Negatives: Is undersized and can play even smaller than he measures. Will lose sight of the ball and plays better on the move. Is average in terms of tackling technique and doesn't always wrap. When tied up with a blocker, normally gets engulfed. Has suffered back problems and doesn't drive with his lower half.

Summary: Clanton's stock could rise with expected strong workouts, but he's not likely to rise any higher than a second-day guy because he isn't an every-down defensive tackle.
