Angelo Crowell

SELECTED BY CAROLINA , ROUND 3, PICK 31, OVERALL PICK 94
LB | (6-0, 236, 4.74) | Virginia
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Older brother, Germane, was a top receiver for Virginia and the Lions but recently has been hampered by injuries and was cut by Detroit. As a true freshman in 1999, Angelo played in every game and started the finale at outside linebacker. In 2000, he started the first four games at outside linebacker and then split time. In '01, started every game in new head coach Al Groh's 3-4 defense, led the team in tackles and was a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference pick while playing all four downs, meaning he stayed in the game for special teams. Had 34 tackles, two tackles for loss and broke up one pass in 1999; 87-1-2 in 2000; and 144 tackles, including 10 for loss, four sacks, four passes broken up and two interceptions in '01. Crowell played in a defense that was made for him as a senior, when he set a school record with 154 tackles and had 10-plus tackles in 11-of-14 games. Also had six tackles for loss, three sacks, forced four fumbles and recovered two. Showed good instincts and versatility at the Senior Bowl.

Positives: Great motor. Runs and chases. Tough, hard-nosed, instinctive and productive, especially between the tackles. More quick than fast. Very good football intelligence. Good special-teams player in coverage. Broad, thick frame with 10-inch hands. Very productive vs. run and pass. Good reading keys and diagnosing. Slips blocks and fills. Gets good leverage and explosiveness. Strong tackler who has hip explosion and quick-twitch. Very competitive. Good blitzing. Plays bigger than his size and faster than his speed. Can move laterally through trash and uses his hands well to shed. Good reading and reacting and dropping into coverage. Big hitter who caused a stir at the Senior Bowl when he planted Colorado State RB Cecil Sapp during a blocking drill.

Negatives: Not natural in coverage. Lacks great height and timed speed. Not fast. Not a big playmaker. Does not take on blockers well at times. Plays better going forward and will struggle in coverage. Lacks long speed.

Summary: Questionable size in the middle, but may not have the speed to play "Will" at the next level.
