Wayne Hunter

SELECTED BY DETROIT , ROUND 3, PICK 10, OVERALL PICK 73
OT | (6-5, 303, 5.12) | Hawaii
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: In high school, played basketball and was a track weight man. Also part of canoe team and played linebacker. Played in 10-of-12 games on the defensive line at the University of California as a true freshman in 1999, recording 14 tackles, including five tackles for loss. Redshirted in 2000 after transferring to Hawaii. Played in 11-of-12 games in '01, starting two at defensive tackle, recording 12 tackles and one for loss, but was hampered by a back injury most of the season. Moved to the other side of the ball and started 13-of-14 games at left tackle last fall, missing the finale for disciplinary reasons. Entered the NFL draft with one year of eligibility remaining. Improved his stock immensely at the Combine, when he benchpressed 225 pounds 37 times and ran a 5.1 40.

Positives: Big, physical, athletic player with a huge up side. Very strong. Has long arms and a powerful punch. Locks on and is very aggressive. Tough and nasty with some athletic ability. Thick and wide. Good in small areas. OK adjusting in space. Huge frame and should have no problem adding 20-30 pounds. Good footwork. Great upper-body strength and explosion.

Negatives: Played tackle just one year. Lacks technique and polish. Played in a predominantly passing offense and does not run block well. Average mental alertness. Not the most consistent. Gets off the ball slowly on running plays and can improve his leg drive.

Summary: May not be ready to contribute immediately, but he may have more up side than any other lineman in the draft because he has great athleticism and can be molded.
