By Pro Football WeeklyNotes: High school quarterback and basketball player. Redshirted in 1998. Backed up David Garrard at quarterback in '99 and 2000. In '01, Alston became East Carolina's "Slash", starting the last seven games and lining up in the slot, on the wing and in the backfield, when he would play running back and some option quarterback. Had 31 catches for 443 yards and three touchdowns, 11 carries for 124 yards and one score and completed 2-of-4 passes for 105 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. In '02, was used mostly as a receiver and caught 36-702-6, averaging 19.5 yards per catch. Arrested in November '00 for trying to use counterfeit currency. Positives: Is built like a brick. Very versatile. He is quick off the mark and is a quick-twitch athlete with large, naturally soft hands. Willing to make the tough catch over the middle and will extend for the ball. Big, 10-inch hands.Negatives: Routes need refinement. Is still learning to be a receiver. Lacks explosion with the ball. Has one speed. Summary: Versatile receiver who has a lot of room for growth and could be a late second-day pick.* Player biographies are provided by Pro Football Weekly.
