Stephen Battle

WR | (6-1, 188, 4.55) | Valley City State
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Two-sport athlete who enrolled as a basketball player in 1998 and wound up walking on to the football team. Three-year starter in basketball. Starting wide receiver in '99, 2000 and '01. Caught 18 passes for 225 yards and six touchdowns in 1999; 56-1,168-14 in 2000; and 51-937-13 in '01. Also returned 14 kickoffs for 268 yards in 1999; 16-456-3 in 2000; and 9-233-1 in '01. Caught pneumonia in a lung on Feb. 28, 2002, but still played in 10 games in '02, catching 57-897-15, running three times for 22 yards, and returning 13 kickoffs for 364 yards and one touchdown.

Positives: Good size, speed and quickness. Good buildup speed and athletic ability. Long 34-inch arms. Dominated at low competition level. Three-year starter on the basketball team.

Negatives: Never tested or pressed against players he faced. Everyone played off. Has never had to defeat the jam or run disciplined routes to get open. Struggles as a blocker. Does not run great patterns and can improve his release off the line. More fast than quick. Poor weight-room numbers. Talks smack. Has average hands. Gathers and rounds cuts. Big fish in a small pond. Lacks desire to block.

Summary: Overlooked football player who came to school as a basketball player and could be in for a rude awakening with the competition level in the NFL.
