Billy Mcmullen

SELECTED BY NEW ENGLAND , ROUND 3, PICK 32, OVERALL PICK 95
WR | (6-3, 210, 4.65) | Virginia
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Did not start but still caught 28 passes for 483 yards and six touchdowns as a true freshman in 1999. Started 10 of 11 games in 2000, catching 30-541-3. Emerged as a star in '01, when he led the Atlantic Coast Conference in all key receiving categories and won All-ACC honors while catching 83-1,060-12. Sat out in the spring of '02 to rehabilitate his shoulder. Caught 68-886-3 as a senior and carried seven times for 37 yards and one touchdown.

Positives: Good size. Thick, muscular, tall and wide with thick hips. Good worker who is good in the clutch. Quick feet. Great wingspan with long 35-inch arms down to his knees and big 10-inch hands. Durable and productive. Uses size well. Quick and sudden off the line. Hard to jam. Sinks hips into and out of breaks. Strong vs. the press. Quick hands and reflexes. Willing, tough, physical blocker who is strong after the catch. Takes long, strong strides with no wasted motion. Good hand-eye coordination and extends. Captain who is coachable and prepared with top intangibles. Excellent in a crowd. Very good adjusting to the ball knows how to position his body to shield the defender from the ball and uses his height well on alley-oop passes.

Negatives: Lacks pure, top-end speed to get separation. Not a burner. Not real nifty. Lacks second gear and elusiveness. Better than good but not great hands. Lacks make-you-miss and may not be quick and fast enough to get separation on the next level.

Summary: Is no burner but has adequate functional speed to get separation and the drive to be successful at the next level. Somewhat similar to Virginia standout Herman Moore, but not as refined as Moore was coming out of college. Borderline first-day pick.
