Deandrew Rubin

SELECTED BY NEW YORK , ROUND 7, PICK 52, OVERALL PICK 253
WR | (5-11, 185, 4.5) | SOUTH FLORIDA
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: High school teammate of South Florida QB Marquel Blackwell. Redshirted in 1998 and missed the first four games in 2000 with a sprained ankle. Was slowed by injuries after the Pittsburgh game in '01 but still finished third in the nation in punt returns. Caught 22 passes for 285 yards and five touchdowns in 1999 and returned 23 kickoffs for 578 yards. Caught 17-189-2 and returned 14 kickoffs for 389 yards and nine punts for 211 yards and one touchdown in 2000. Averaged 23.4 yards on punt returns that season. Caught 34-532-4 and returned kickoffs 8-165 and punts 26-406-1 in '01. Averaged 15.6 yards on punt returns in '01. Caught 14-265-4 in the first two games in '01, when he was completely healthy. Academically ineligible for spring '02 but was eligible by fall. Played in 10 games in '02, catching 18-357-3 (95 long); returning 29 punts for 432 yards (14.9 avg.) and two touchdowns (56 long); and 15 kick returns for 402 yards (26.8 avg.) with one touchdown (82 long).

Positives: Vertical receiver with buildup speed. Good ball skills and soft hands to pluck and snatch. Adjusts to the ball. Has good agility, balance, athletic ability and football intelligence. Competes for the ball. Returns punts and has a great feel for it.

Negatives: Lacks suddenness to separate. Uncovers built-up speed but has no explosion or deep burst. "Me" player without much of a work ethic. Not great make-you-miss for a top punt returner. Has had trouble staying healthy. Is not very quick or sudden and is a little slow into and out of his breaks.

Summary: Will be lucky to catch on as a free-agent return man.
