Thrashers trade Stefan to Dallas for Kapanen
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Thrashers traded center Patrik Stefan, their first draft pick, and defenseman Jaroslav Modry to Dallas for center Niko Kapanen and a draft pick minutes before the beginning of Saturday night's draft.
Stefan was the first overall pick for the expansion team in 1999. He had 10 goals and 14 assists in 64 games in the 2005-06 season as the last remaining member of the Thrashers' original team.
Modry led the Thrashers' defensemen with 38 points -- seven goals and 31 assists.
Kapanen had 14 goals and 21 assists for Dallas last season.
Thrashers general manager Don Waddell, known for his draft-day deals, had hoped to add a player to fill the void left by the impending departure of free-agent center Marc Savard.
The Thrashers also acquired a seventh-round pick in Saturday's draft. They had the No. 12 pick in the first round.
