The Washington Capitals welcomed back a familiar face Friday when they claimed defenseman Todd Rohloff off waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Rohloff, who collected one assist in 16 games with the Capitals during the 2001-02 season, signed with the Blue Jackets as a free agent last September. The veteran journeyman, who turns 30 next week, had two assists in 24 games with Columbus this season.

The Capitals also assigned center Brian Sutherby to Portland of the American Hockey League.

Sutherby, 21, had two goals and 28 penalty minutes in 30 games with Washington. In 109 career contests, the former first-round draft pick has four goals and nine assists.
