NEW YORK -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer was suspended for one game Saturday by the NHL for head-butting Los Angeles Kings forward Ian Laperriere.

Fischer got into a fight with Laperriere in the third period of Detroit's 5-4 win in Los Angeles on Thursday. The suspension will cost Fischer $6,256 in pay. He had to sit out Saturday's game against Phoenix.

In other news, rookie defenseman Niklas Kronwall is expected to be sideline up to three months with a broken right leg.

The Red Wings will know Monday whether Kronwall's injury will require surgery.

Kronwall, who has a goal and four assists in 20 games this season, was injured during warmups before Thursday's game against Los Angeles when his skate got caught in a rut in the ice.

Fischer has one goal, nine assists and 61 penalty minutes in 50 games.
