Sturm, San Jose's second-leading scorer with 41 points, was injured in the Sharks' loss last week to Colorado. Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote drove Sturm feet-first into the boards while both players chased the puck.
Sturm was placed on injured reserve last weekend. Team doctors discovered no serious ligament damage, and they expect Sturm to be ready for training camp.
"The overall injury could have been far more severe," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said.
He added, "Marco is resting comfortably at home, and we are expecting a full recovery."
Sturm had 21 goals in 64 games this season, leading San Jose with 10 power-play goals and six game winners.
