STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- There will be no shortage of leadership on Sweden's entry at the World Cup of Hockey as four NHL team captains were among 26 players named to the squad Monday.
Markus Naslund of the Vancouver Canucks, Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators and defenseman Mattias Norstrom of the Los Angeles Kings are among 15 holdovers from the team that was stunned by Belarus in the quarterfinals of the 2002 Olympics.
Sweden is coming off a silver medal at the World Hockey Championships, and there are 11 members of that team on the World Cup roster. Among them are defensemen Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, Christian Backman of the St. Louis Blues, Dick Tarnstrom of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Daniel Tjarnqvist of the Atlanta Thrashers.
Colorado Avalanche superstar Peter Forsberg highlights a group of forwards that includes Red Wings teammates Tomas Holmstrom and Henrik Zetterberg, Fredrik Modin of the Tampa Bay Lightning, P.J. Axelsson of the Boston Bruins, Nils Ekman of the San Jose Sharks, Andreas Johansson of the Nashville Predators, Sami Pahlsson of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Marcus Nilson of the Calgary Flames.
Winger Jorgen Jonsson is one of two non-NHL players on the roster, joining goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, a member of Vastra Frolunda.
Germans tap three Sharks
Germany also unveiled its roster for the eight-nation tournament. Washington Capitals goaltender Olaf Kolzig and Sharks teammates Marco Sturm, Christian Ehrhoff and Marcel Goc were among six NHL players on the team. The others are Buffalo Sabres center Jochen Hecht and Flyers defenseman Dennis Seidenberg.
