Surgery repaired bulging disc

TORONTO -- Maple Leafs goaltender Ed Belfour had
back surgery on Thursday and is expected to make a complete
recovery, general manager John Ferguson said.

A procedure to repair a bulging disc in Belfour's back was
performed at a Cleveland clinic.

Coach Pat Quinn said he was relieved the operation was a success
since his team will again rely heavily on Belfour next season.

Belfour, 39, played 59 games for Toronto last season. He was
34-19-6 with a 2.13 goals-against average and 10 shutouts --
second-most in the NHL.

In the playoffs, he became the 12th goalie in NHL history to
register three shutouts in one playoff series when Toronto
eliminated Ottawa in the first round.
