Two charged in alleged Toronto nightclub melee
Dallas Stars defenseman Trevor Daley was arrested early Monday morning after an incident at a Toronto nightclub in which Daley and another NHL player allegedly uttered death threats toward a doorman, The Dallas Morning News reported on its Web site Monday night.
The charges did not specify what allegedly was said by Daley, 20, and Luke Sellars, 23, a defenseman in the Atlanta Thrashers' system, the paper reported.
"These are not serious allegations," Daley's attorney, Dan Kirby, told the Morning News. "It involves a bouncer at a nightclub who is unhappy about what happened."
Daley, who was released on bail, did not comment on the charges. Neither player spoke in court or afterward, according to The Canadian Press.
Despite Kirby's assurances otherwise, the conditions placed on the bail are serious. The judge in the case stipulated that Daley and Sellars not buy, consume or possess alcoholic beverages, are not to enter the entertainment district, or associate with the doorman, the Morning News reported.
Kirby also told the paper that "perhaps words were exchanged in the heat of the moment ... but there was no allegations of violence or force."
The players face another Ontario court appearance Sept. 17, but Kirby told the paper that the case will not prevent Daley from attending the Stars' prospect camp beginning Sept. 9 or training camp beginning Sept. 20.
Daley has made headlines before. In March 2003, former New York Rangers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck resigned from his job as GM/coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds after referring to the player with a racial slur.
Daley quit the team but returned after Vanbiesbrouck apologized.
In 2003-04, Daley played 27 games in his rookie season with the Stars and had one goal and five assists.
Both players are second-round draft picks, Sellars in 1999, Daley in 2002. Sellars played in one game for the Thrashers in 2001-02.
