Lukowich 'excited' to join Brahmas
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Brad Lukowich went from the Stanley Cup champions to the Central Hockey League on Monday.
That's what happens during an NHL lockout.
The Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman signed to play with the Fort Worth Brahmas because the NHL has been shut down due to a labor dispute.
"I'm very excited to have the chance to play for the Brahmas," Lukowich said. "Unfortunately, the NHL lockout has left me without a place to play this season.
"By playing for the Brahmas, I'll be able to stay in shape and be ready to go if and when the NHL lockout comes to an end."
Lukowich, 28, is the first NHL player to sign a contract to play for an independent, nonaffiliated pro team in North America. Should the NHL season resume, he'll rejoin the Lightning.
