Kolzig, 34, was hired Tuesday as the goaltending coach of the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League.
"This kind of gets me on the coaching side of things and keeps me on the ice and in shape until this thing is rectified," Kolzig told the Tri-City Herald. "It will be good for me to be around the hockey atmosphere."
With the Americans, Kolzig will coach goaltenders Carey Price, 17, and Jesse Deckert, 18.
Kolzig won the NHL's top goaltending award, the Vezina Trophy, for the 1999-2000 season. He played for Team Germany in the World Cup of Hockey this month.
Kolzig, who formerly played for the Americans, is building a new home in the Tri-Cities area.
