Haywood with three points in finale
ESTERO, Fla. -- The Trenton Titans won the ECHL championship Wednesday night, beating Florida 4-1 as Leon Hayward scored a goal and added two assists.
Trenton won the first two games of the series, then Florida took the next two before Trenton won Game 5. In the sixth game, Hayward's power-play goal in the first period put the Titans on top.
Rick Kowalsky scored with just 9 seconds left in the opening period for a 2-0 edge, and the Everblades never caught up.
Michael Schutte and Nick Deschenes scored in the third period for the Titans, giving them their first ECHL crown.
Keith Anderson was the only Florida player to score, early in the second period. But Trenton's Andrew Allen made 21 saves before a sellout crowd of 7,805 in capture the Kelly Cup. He had 14 wins in the playoffs.
