STAMFORD, Conn. -- OLN, the cable home of NHL, hired veteran Mike "Doc" Emrick as its main play-by-play announcer for the upcoming season.

Emrick, in his 25th year as a hockey announcer, has been the voice of the New Jersey Devils since 1993, and was previously play-by-play announcer for the Philadelphia Flyers from 1988-93. He has called NHL games for all of the major networks.

"The addition of Doc Emrick to our team is the first step in bringing fans first-rate hockey coverage on OLN," said Marc Fein, the cable network's vice president of programming and production.

The NHL season opens Oct. 5, with OLN's opening game the New York Rangers at the Philadelphia Flyers.
