Brown signs with Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs have found a suitable replacement for rugged defenseman Bryan Marchment.

Apparently unwilling to pay the asking price of free agent Marchment, the Maple Leafs signed Brad Brown to a one-year contract Saturday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Brown made $750,000 in 2003-04. Marchment still has not received an NHL contract.

Drafted 18th overall by Montreal in 1994, Brown has appeared in 330 career games with Montreal, Chicago, the New York Rangers, Minnesota and Buffalo, collecting two goals and 27 assists. The 29-year-old also has recorded 747 penalty minutes, using his 6-4, 220-pound frame to punish opposing forwards.

A native of Baie Verte, Newfoundland, Brown was a member of the Wild during their surprising run to the Western Conference finals in 2003, registering 16 penalty minutes in 11 games. He appeared in 30 games with Minnesota the following season before being traded to the Sabres in March 2004.
