According to a report on The Sports Network of Canada's Web site Thursday, the NHL Players Association filed a grievance with the league on behalf of Nolan, who did not receive the $5.6 million contract option for 2004-05 from the Maple Leafs.

The Maple Leafs decided not to pay Nolan, believing the torn ACL and MCL the right wing suffered was not hockey-related. However, the five-time All-Star believes Toronto misdiagnosed the injuries, which originally occurred in April 2004 and were surgically repaired on July 26.

That month, The Toronto Star reported the Maple Leafs filed paperwork with the NHL to buy out Nolan's contract in case they lost a grievance with the union.
