Canes' Whitney goes on IR with groin strain

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Ray Whitney's tenure with the
Carolina Hurricanes has gotten off to a disappointing start.

The Hurricanes on Thursday placed Whitney on injured reserve,
retroactive to Monday, with a groin strain.

The veteran left wing signed a free agent contract with Carolina
in the offseason after collecting 14 goals and 29 assists in 67
games with the Detroit Red Wings in 2003-04.

Whitney missed the Hurricanes' season-opening 5-2 loss at
defending champion Tampa Bay on Wednesday night.

The Hurricanes also recalled goaltender Kevin Nastiuk from
Lowell of the American Hockey League on Thursday. He was sent
to the Lock Monsters on Sept. 23 but will rejoin the team
after fellow netminder Martin Gerber suffered a hip injury at
Tampa Bay.

A fourth-round draft pick in 2003, the 20-year-old Nastiuk went
63-37-9 in two seasons with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey
League, helping the Tigers to two consecutive Central Division
titles.
