Rangers place goalie Weekes on injured reserve
New York Rangers
The Rangers on Wednesday placed Weekes on IR, retroactive to last Friday, with a bruised right ankle.
Weekes, who is 7-4-1 with a 2.79 goals-against average and an .898 save percentage in 12 games this season, suffered the injury last Thursday in the third period of a 6-3 win at Atlanta. Weekes stopped 16-of-19 shots before New York defenseman Marek Malik nudged Atlanta's J.P. Vigier into the net, forcing it to fall and catch on Weekes' skate.
Rookie Henrik Lundqvist replaced Weekes in that game and then won the longest shootout in NHL history, stopping 12-of-15 shots in the shootout, as the Rangers posted a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals last Saturday.
Weekes will be eligible to play again this Saturday when the Rangers visit the Washington Capitals.
Also Wednesday, the Rangers announced that right wing Jed Ortmeyer has been granted non-roster status by the NHL due to family obligations and will be eligible to play on Saturday.
Both Ortmeyer and Weekes will have to miss Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
