Miller defensive, Hossa offensive players of week

NEW YORK -- After recording points on all six of the Atlanta Thrashers' goals in two games, right winger Marian Hossa on Monday was named the NHL's offensive player of the week.

Hossa had a goal and five assists in the Thrashers' 6-5 shootout loss to Washington last Tuesday. The next night in New Jersey, he scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory over the Devils.

Hossa is tied for 11th in the NHL in scoring with 42 points, including 17 goals.

Others considered for the offensive award were centers Brendan Morrison of the Vancouver Canucks and Shawn Horcoff of the Edmonton Oilers.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller earned defensive player of the week honors after recording a 0.96 goals-against average and .969 save percentage in two games.

Last Monday, Miller made 33 saves and denied three of four attempts in the shootout as the Sabres edged Philadelphia 2-1. Four days later, he made 30 saves in a 4-1 win against Tampa Bay.

Appearing in only 12 of Buffalo's 36 games because of injury, Miller has posted an 8-4 record and 2.46 GAA.

Other defensive candidates included goaltenders Manny Fernandez of the Minnesota Wild and Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings.
