Artyukhin suspended for hitting player with helmet

TORONTO -- Tampa Bay Lightning forward Evgeny Artyukhin was suspended for two games Tuesday after hitting Antoine Vermette with the Ottawa forward's own helmet.

The play occurred during the second period of Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Senators. Artyukhin was given a match penalty after taking Vermette's helmet off his head and striking him over the head with it during a scuffle.

"I've never seen a player take it off the other player's head and then hit him over the head with it," Senators coach Bryan Murray said after the game. "I don't know why the kid did that. I don't know what was going on there even."

Vermette required several stitches for a cut on the top of his head.

Artyukhin is eligible to return on Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
