Penguins' Cairns suspended three games

TORONTO -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Eric Cairns was suspended for three games by the NHL Thursday for his conduct during a loss to Ottawa earlier this week.

Cairns was assessed five penalties totaling 40 minutes -- including a double game misconduct -- at the end of the second period. Cairns, who got a major for spearing Zdeno Chara, was also assessed a fighting major and a misconduct. Chara was given a fighting major and a misconduct.

Cairns will be eligible to return to the lineup next Friday against the New York Islanders.
