Malik out after aggravating shoulder injury
Malik was hurt when he reached for a puck during the Rangers' morning skate in advance of their game Tuesday night against the New York Islanders. Officially the team is calling it an upper body injury.
He missed the game as did other top defensemen Darius Kasparaitis and Tom Poti. Kasparaitis sat out for the 10th time in 11 contests due to a groin injury. Poti has been sidelined two games by an undisclosed upper body injury.
New York recalled 21-year-old defenseman David Liffiton from Hartford of the AHL on Tuesday and put him right in the lineup against the Islanders for his NHL debut.
Kasparaitis seems to be close to returning as he skated Tuesday morning with his teammates. But No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist was not on the ice, and was scratched for the fifth consecutive game.
Kevin Weekes got the start in goal and was backed up by Chris Holt, who has just one game of NHL experience.
