Rangers could call up Marc Staal by weekend
Another Staal brother could be in the NHL sooner rather than later.
According to a report on The Sports Network of Canada's Web site, Marc Staal could join the New York Rangers by the weekend.
Staal, a defenseman who signed with the Rangers in September after being selected in the first round of the 2005 draft, could be in the lineup by Saturday if his immigration papers are in order. TSN also reported that the Rangers had hoped to have Staal in the lineup as soon as Thursday.
Staal had 11 goals and 38 assists in 57 games this season for the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves.
Staal, 18, was picked by the Rangers after the team moved up in the draft order by trading its 16th and 41st overall picks to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for the 12th overall pick.
Marc Staal is the younger brother of Hurricanes standout Eric Staal. Their siblings, Jared and Jordan, are also considered to be up-and-coming prospects.
