MONTREAL -- Former Montreal Canadiens star Serge Savard was fined nearly $1,100 and had his driver's license suspended for one year Thursday, two years after he hit two cars while driving impaired.

Savard, who played 14 seasons for the Canadiens in the 1960s and 1970s before eventually becoming general manager, was arrested in September 2004. He won eight Stanley Cup championships as a player and two more as general manager.

"I'm just a normal citizen, and I have to face my responsibilities," Savard told reporters outside the courtroom.
