Elias misses first game of season with sore foot

ATLANTA -- New Jersey Devils captain Patrik Elias was a late scratch against the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday night after taking a shot of his foot the previous day at Washington.

Elias, who has a team-high 32 points, participated in warmups before telling Devils coach Claude Julien that his foot was too stiff.

Team officials made no announcement regarding Elias. New Jersey's next game is Tuesday night when it hosts Pittsburgh.

It marked the first game this season that Elias didn't play. He missed 39 the first games a year ago due to hepatitis-A.

The star left wing's tip-in snapped a second-period tie at Washington on Friday night, leading the Devils to a 4-1 win.

Elias, 30, signed a seven-year, $42 million contract in July to stay with New Jersey.
