Hawks sign Toews to three-year, entry level contract

CHICAGO -- First-round draft pick Jonathan Toews signed a three-year, entry level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old center, a standout at the University of North Dakota, scored two goals and added five assists for gold-medal winning Canada at this year's world junior hockey championships. Toews was one of the youngest members of the team that won the tournament the past two years.

"I was very impressed with the way he played in the world championships," Blackhawks coach Denis Savard said of the No. 3 overall pick in last year's NHL draft. "Jonathan is a heart-and-soul kid. He looks like he's been very well coached. He is a solid two-way player with lots of skill."

Toews played in 34 games this season, his second at North Dakota, scoring 18 goals and adding 28 assists. The Fighting Sioux advanced to the semifinals of NCAA tournament before losing to Boston College.
